Unleashing Student Passion for Learning...

Last spring, our district developed our 2015 Technology Plan. Using our district mission statement as a foundation, we identified 4 goals in the plan:
  • Unleash student's passion to be lifelong learners
  • Empower and enhance excellent teaching
  • Engage families in a partnership for education
  • Demonstrate excellence in service, operation, and productivity
On Monday, we will have our yearly district kick-off event, and the tech plan will be one of the key components. I will have a small roll in the morning session, sharing an "Aha!" moment from my experience as an educator.

We will also showcase members of our Edina Teaching and Technology Cohort, a group of 25 educators who spent the last year in a job embedded, professional development experience where they earned a Teaching and Technology Certificate from Hamline University. Cohort members will conduct poster sessions, showcasing how they transformed their instruction this past year. I'm proud to have had the opportunity to work with this amazing group of educators, who did some amazing things, AND are willing to share!

The day will culminate with two talks by Will Richardson, who describes himself as:
" parent, educator, speaker, author, 10-year blogger at Weblogg-ed ... I'm trying to answer the question "What happens to schools and classrooms and learning in a 2.0 world?"
He'll speak to staff in the afternoon, and then will conduct a free talk for parents and community members in the evening. I've had the pleasure of hearing Will speak at conferences many times, and 2 years ago, I had the opportunity to work with Will and his partner, Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach in a Powerful Learning Practice Cohort. His passion for student learning will be evident, and he will challenge us as educators to harness the power of technology to enhance our classroom practices to unleash that passion in students.

I'm excited to work in a district that understands that:
a) It's about the learning and
b) The role technology can play in making that happen!

Here's to a great school year!!

TIES 2012: Kathryn Smith: Innovative Spaces Support 21st Century Learning

Kathryn Smith , former Bemidji State professor, presented on Innovative Spaces Support 21st Century Learning. Her presentation slides can be found here . Today, learning can happen anywhere, anytime, and on any device.  She started by using PollEverywhere to ask about the status of mobile technologies and school learning environments. She thinks that the TPACK model is a good one to use when implementing professional development around 21st Century learning. We are using this model in our BYOD professional development. Smith notes that the National Educational Technology Plan , is a great road map for change. Research has shown that the appropriate use of technology and the appropriate design of learning spaces is having a significant positive impact on learning. The learning spaces today are not that far removed from 19th Century classrooms. She showed this video from the University of Michigan on research on design of learning environment.
